Saving the Arctic Refuge
The Arctic Refuge is one of the finest examples of wilderness left on Earth and among the least affected by human activity. Its wilderness values are timeless and irreplaceable. And one of the view places left in the world where the Arctic Fox can be proctected from hunters, and their ongoing survival can be ensured.
Although the refuge has managed to maintain its natural condition, oil companies and members of Congress have fought for more than 20 years to open the Arctic Refuge to oil drilling. The We and the Wilderness Society are committed to permanently protecting the refuge from oil development.
In additiont to assisting the Wilderness Society, we are attempting to secure approx. 2 million acres within the refuge as a haven and sancuary for the arctic foxes. Within this haven we can ensure that they will not be hunted or killed for their pelts, as well as ensure that contact with domesticted dogs and the red foxes be restricted. By doing so we can ensure a save place for them to breed and secure their population without interferance.
Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
At 19 million acres, this northeast Alaska refuge is the largest in the nation. Here’s what you can find on the refuge:
-
A complete range of arctic and subarctic ecosystems
-
An extraordinary assemblage of wildlife
-
More than 250 animal species live on the refuge, including:
-
Wolves and Arctic foxes
-
Grizzlies and polar bears
-
Caribou
-
Musk oxen
-
Millions of migrating birds from as far away as the Chesapeake Bay, Africa, and Antarctica. Many of these birds appear in your own backyard, then head to the Arctic for summer breeding.
For the past two decades, the oil industry has mounted lobbying campaigns to gain access to the coastal plain of the Refuge and convert it to a vast oil development field.
The A.F.H.F and Wilderness Society are working to protect this refuge and its extraordinary wildlife from losing habitat to oil drilling.
